How do I backup and/or restore pages in WordPress?

Many WordPress pages will contain shortcodes and other styled text that generate the desired look on the frontend of your site. Before editing any text, it's important to backup the original code in case any mistakes are made.

To backup a page:

  1. Log in to your WordPress administration area
  2. Click on the "Pages" tab in the left menu
  3. Click on the title of the page you want to backup
  4. Click the "HTML" tab (next to "Visual") above the text editor
  5. Left click once in the upper left hand corner of the editor, to the left of the first character
  6. Hit "ctrl + A" to select all the text in the field
  7. Hit "crtrl + C" to copy all of the text
  8. Open Notepad or another plain text editor on your computer and hit "ctrl + V" to paste the text
  9. Save the file to your computer using a name that you will remember
To restore a page:

  1. Log in to your WordPress administration area
  2. Click on the "Pages" tab in the left menu
  3. Click on the title of the page you want to restore
  4. Click the "HTML" tab (next to "Visual") above the text editor
  5. Left click in the text editor and hit "ctrl + X" and then backspace to delete all existing text
  6. Open the page's backup file on your computer
  7. Copy the text from the file and paste it into the editor
  8. Click "Update" button on the right
